The sixth edition of Mayhem… in the Backroom presented by Zehr Insurance will feature a new take on the vintage-inspired lifestyle room, as a special ‘Lowrider’ section shares the space with the established vehicles, art and fashion in Hall 3. Combining the variety of hot rods and custom cars from the 1930s to the 1980s – and adding in the Lowriders – the Mayhem Room will boast more than 50 unique machines.
There will be a special display from Mayhem presenting sponsor Zehr Insurance, near the entrance to the Mayhem Room, featuring a pair of vintage campers. Representatives from Zehr Insurance will be on-hand to talk about their specialty insurance program geared towards collector cars. They’ll also be giving away a custom-pinstriped retro fridge at the show.
Similar to past years, the Mayhem Room will include much more than just cool rides. Pinstripers, photographers and traditional tattoo artists will be on-hand, along with Pin-Up clothing retailer Suzie’s Bombshell Boutique.
Suzie Major returns as host of the popular Miss Motorama Pinup Pageant, showcasing the vintage Pinup style. The pageant takes place on the Mayhem Room stage on Saturday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m.
The variety of activities and lifestyle focus in the Mayhem Room provides a one-of-a-kind experience for showgoers, making it a show-within-a-show.
“There’s a different vibe to the Mayhem Room, it’s something that’s quite unique,” said Mayhem Room Coordinator Brandon Roberts. “It’s more than just the vehicles; it’s about the culture and creativity of the custom car scene. It’s a place to show off your own style and take in the many different ways people put their stamps on the automotive community.”
While there’s camaraderie and respect among vehicle owners in the Mayhem Room, there will still be some friendly competition. The room has its own category of awards presented during the Motorama Special Awards presentation, being held on Sunday, March 9 on the Meguiar’s Main Stage, in Hall 2.
And as mentioned, a new feature called ‘Lowrider Lane’ will share space with Mayhem in Hall 3 at this year’s show. The area will include 25-plus lowriders from the 1940s to 1980s, with a variety of models of both ‘bombs’ and ‘hoppers.’ Popular among the Mexican American community in California, Lowriders are vehicles that are lowered very close to the ground and typically have hydraulics that can raise either end of the automobile. They also have unique and elaborate paint jobs.
Last year’s Featured Club, the Toronto chapter of the Oldies Car Club, will be one of two groups taking part in the Mayhem Room Lowrider display. The group focuses on classic Lowriders, or ‘bombs,’ largely from between 1935 and 1960. The Toronto chapter of Rollerz Only is also taking part in Lowrider Lane.
“We always look to showcase new content and this year’s Mayhem Room is no exception,” continued Mayhem Room manager Brandon Roberts. “Motorama has displayed Lowriders before, but we’ve never had so many in a single space. We’re excited to show off these unique rides; this is something we don’t see very often – especially in these numbers – and I think showgoers will be entertained and interested to see them.”
